How it works
Start searching with last name
What if I can‘t find the person I’m looking for?
You may be narrowing your search too much with too many search fields. Try just a last name or first and last name and browse the results. Our index covers obituaries published in the Altoona Mirror from 1929 onward. For earlier records, contact a librarian at jmcconnell@altoonalibrary.org — we may be able to assist with older searches. It is also possible a notice was not published in the Altoona Mirror for the person you are seeking.
How will I receive the obituary?
After payment is confirmed, a staff member or volunteer will email the obituary scan to the address you provide at checkout. Delivery typically takes 3–5 business days.
Are refunds available?
No refunds are available. Because obituaries vary in length, scope, and content, the library cannot guarantee that an obituary contains specific information or that it is the record you are looking for. Please review the name, date, and any descriptor carefully before purchasing.
Can I request obituaries by phone or in person?
Yes — you are welcome to visit the library or call 814-946-0417 during open hours. You can also email jmcconnell@altoonalibrary.org directly with your request.
Why are there sometimes two dates listed?
Two dates indicate the obituary appeared in the Altoona Mirror on more than one day — for example, as an initial notice and again as a paid memorial. You will receive the most complete version of the obituary. There is no need to pay twice.
Do you have obituaries from before 1929?
The searchable online index begins in 1929. For older obituaries, the library maintains paper records and microfilm. Please contact a librarian for assistance with earlier dates.
How do I know the obituary is for the right person?
The library is not responsible for confirming that a result matches the specific individual you are seeking. Use the date, middle initial, and/or maiden name to help you confirm your selection is the obituary you are looking for. Other identifying information can only be discovered after library staff look up the obituary in the microfilm.
