The Library, in its role of providing for the informational and entertainment needs of the community, maintains many collections of popular materials, informative nonfiction, and an extensive reference collection. These materials have been selected with all age groups in mind.
The Library maintains a collection of over 130 popular magazines and local and national newspapers. Newspapers are archived for one month, excluding the Altoona Mirror which is available on microfilm back until 1929, and in paper form for one year. Magazines are archived for one year. The Library also has a subscription to Value Line for information on the financial markets.
The library houses a vast collection of over 125,000 books, over 4,000 DVDs and Blu-Rays, and over 6,000 audio books. These materials are constantly reevaluated and new materials are consistently being added.
As a member of the Altoona District, the Altoona Area Public Library has access to nearly 40,000 ebooks and e-audiobooks.
